Best Dictation Software in 2026: 10 Apps Compared

Blip AI Team11 min read

The best dictation software depends on your computer. We compared 10 speech-to-text tools on price, platforms, offline use and free plans, checked October 2026.

Quick answer: The best dictation software depends on your computer and budget. Apple Dictation and Windows voice typing are free and built in. Superwhisper, VoiceInk and MacWhisper can run on your Mac. Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice are cloud apps. Blip AI also runs on Linux. Prices were checked 24 to 30 October 2026.

Most "best speech to text software" lists are written by one vendor and rank that vendor first. We build Blip AI, so you should read ours with that in mind. This page sets out its criteria first, lists the apps alphabetically, and says plainly when another tool is the better pick. Every price comes from the vendor's own page.

How we picked: five criteria

We looked at the things that decide which dictation tool you can actually use:

  1. Platforms. Does it run on your operating system, including your phone?
  2. Price. What does it cost, and is there a free plan that is more than a trial?
  3. Where your audio goes. On your device, in the cloud, or your choice.
  4. Text cleanup. Does it type a raw transcript, or remove filler words and fix punctuation?
  5. Works in any app. Or only inside one program.

We didn't score latency, because we haven't measured the other apps. Blip's own figure is in its section. We also left out tools built for transcribing recorded meetings and interviews. That's a different job from typing with your voice. We also left out Dragon: its own page says to contact sales for licensing and lists no price, so we can't compare it fairly. See our Dragon comparison for what we could confirm.

Which dictation software is best for you? Quick picks

These are picks by situation, not a ranking.

  • Best free and built in: Apple Dictation on Mac and iPhone, and Windows voice typing (Win + H) on a PC.
  • Best for keeping audio on your Mac: VoiceInk (Apple Silicon only) or MacWhisper, which both say they transcribe on your device. Superwhisper says it works offline too.
  • Best one-time purchase: VoiceInk ($25 for one Mac) or MacWhisper (€64 Pro licence).
  • Best for a polished cloud experience on Mac and Windows: Wispr Flow or Aqua Voice.
  • Best for Linux: Blip AI, or Spokenly. The Linux roundup covers open-source options too.
  • Best for drafting replies, not just typing: Blip AI, with Action Mode.
  • Best for regulated teams: Willow Voice, whose pricing page lists SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA on its Business plan.

Aqua Voice: a cloud app with a small free taste

Best for: people who want a cloud dictation app and don't need offline use.

Aqua Voice runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Its pricing page shows Pro at $12 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly. The free plan covers your first 1,000 words, once. The Mac page says there is no offline mode, so it needs internet.

Apple Dictation: free on Mac and iPhone

Best for: Mac and iPhone owners who want zero setup and zero cost.

Apple's Dictation guide says you can check Keyboard settings to see whether your voice input is processed on your device or sent to Siri servers. It also says Dictation isn't available in all languages or regions. On macOS 27, an Apple Intelligence option improves spelling, punctuation and capitalization, but only in English on Macs with an M3 chip or later and at least 12 GB of memory. We cover the steps in speech to text on Mac and voice to text on iPhone.

Blip AI: Linux support and reply drafting

Best for: people on Linux, or anyone who wants one app on every device and replies drafted for them.

We make Blip, so treat this section as our own description. You hold a key, speak and let go: Fn on Mac, Ctrl + Win on Windows and Ctrl + Super on Linux. All of them can be changed. Blip removes filler words and fixes punctuation, and it types into any app with a text field. It runs on Mac (macOS 11+), Windows 10 and 11, Linux (AppImage for Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora and Arch, on Wayland and X11), iOS and Android.

Start a sentence with "Hey Blip" and describe the reply you want, and Action Mode drafts the email or Slack message instead of typing your words one by one. Blip Cloud is the default. On Pro you can instead download an on-device Whisper model, so dictation keeps working offline. On Blip Cloud, Blip's own latency figure is about 700 ms. That's a number for Blip, not a comparison with the other apps.

The free plan gives you 2,000 words a month. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial that charges $0 today. Try it from the download page, or see pricing.

MacWhisper: a one-time licence for your Mac

Best for: Mac users who want to pay once and keep audio on their machine.

MacWhisper says it uses local models to transcribe, with optional cloud providers if you prefer them. The Pro licence is a one-time €64 with lifetime updates, and there's a free tier. It's Mac only, and the site warns about fake "MacWhisper for Windows" downloads. If you're on a PC, read MacWhisper for Windows and the MacWhisper alternative page.

Spokenly: local models on four platforms

Best for: people who want free local dictation across Mac, Windows and Linux.

Spokenly runs on Mac, iOS, Windows and Linux, with local Whisper and Parakeet models and cloud options. Its pricing page lists a free plan with local models and no account, a $29 one-time Local+ licence, and Pro at $12 a month or $144 billed yearly (checked 30 October 2026). Cloud models are included in Pro; on the other plans you bring your own API keys. Its Linux page lists .deb, .rpm and AppImage builds for X11 and Wayland, and says global shortcuts and text insertion vary by compositor and app.

Superwhisper: local or cloud, on four platforms

Best for: Mac and Windows users who want to choose between on-device and cloud models.

Superwhisper runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and its site says it works offline. The free plan includes unlimited Whisper models. Paid plans are $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 for a lifetime licence (checked 24 October 2026). Its Linux builds target Omarchy and are still labelled prerelease on GitHub. VoiceInk: a cheap one-time Mac app

Best for: Apple Silicon Mac owners who want the lowest one-time price.

VoiceInk says it "processes all voice transcription locally on your device." Its pricing page lists $25 for one Mac, with a free trial. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 14.4 or later. Optional cloud enhancement works on text, not audio, according to the site.

Willow Voice: built for teams with compliance needs

Best for: teams that need SOC 2 Type II or HIPAA compliance.

Willow Voice runs on Mac, Windows and iPhone; Android is listed as coming soon. Its pricing page shows Pro at $15 a month or $12 billed yearly, and Business at $35 a month or $28 billed yearly, which lists "SOC 2 Type II compliance", "Enforced HIPAA compliance" and zero data retention (checked 30 October 2026). Willow's home page also lists an offline mode, "powered entirely by your device", without saying which platforms or plans it covers. The free plan has unlimited use of its smaller Frontier Mini model and 20 Scribe uses a week.

Windows voice typing: free, but it needs internet

Best for: Windows users who want a free option with no install.

Press Win + H in any text box. Microsoft's support page says voice typing uses online speech recognition powered by Azure Speech services, so you need an internet connection. For offline use, Microsoft's Voice Access page says Voice Access works "without an internet connection" on Windows 11, version 22H2 and later. The same page says Fluid dictation is currently available in English and only on Copilot+ PC devices. Our Windows guide has the steps.

Wispr Flow: the polished cloud pick

Best for: Mac and Windows users who want a well-known cloud app and don't mind paying monthly.

Wispr Flow runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. The pricing page shows Pro at $15 a month, or $12 billed yearly, and a free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop. Its data controls page says transcription always occurs on the cloud. There's no Linux version. For more options, see Wispr Flow alternatives.

Which should you pick? A short guide

  • You want it free: start with Apple Dictation or Windows voice typing. Move on only if cleanup or accuracy bothers you.
  • You care where audio goes: pick a tool that processes on your device, such as VoiceInk or MacWhisper, and check each app's setting, since several also offer cloud models. Superwhisper's site says offline models run best on Apple Silicon Macs.
  • You hate subscriptions: VoiceInk, MacWhisper, Spokenly Local+ and Superwhisper's lifetime licence are one-time purchases.
  • You're on Linux: very few paid apps list it. Blip and Spokenly do; see the Linux roundup.
  • You just want to test dictation: the free speech-to-text tool runs in your browser with nothing to install.
