Everything you need to know about Blip AI voice dictation
Getting Started
Blip AI is an AI-powered voice dictation software for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that allows you to type using your voice. It works in any application and is 4x faster than traditional typing, making it perfect for writing emails, documents, messages, and more.
Simply download Blip AI from our download page, open the installer, and follow the installation prompts. On macOS, you may need to grant accessibility permissions in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility.
For macOS: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, works on both Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) and Intel Macs. For Windows: Windows 10/11, x64 processor. For Linux: AppImage for Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora and Arch, on Wayland and X11. All require at least 500MB of free disk space. Blip Cloud needs an internet connection; on-device models work offline and need extra space for the model download (about 150MB to 1.6GB).
Yes. The free plan gives you 2,000 words a month, with no credit card required. Pro removes the limit: $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial.
Not right now. The lifetime deal sold on AppSumo has ended, and AppSumo lists it as sold out. If you bought it there, it still works: sign in with the account you activated it on, or, if you never activated it, start from your AppSumo account.
Features & Usage
Yes! Blip AI works system-wide in any application where you can type text - including Slack, Gmail, Notion, ChatGPT, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, code editors, and more.
On Blip Cloud, the default, your text appears about 700 milliseconds after you stop speaking. In our tests, that's faster than Wispr Flow and Superwhisper, timed the same way.
Yes. Blip recognizes technical and product names such as Vercel, Supabase and Claude, and you can add your own names, products and jargon to its custom dictionary.
Blip AI uses state-of-the-art AI models for transcription, achieving high accuracy rates (typically 95%+ for clear audio). Accuracy improves with clear speech and good audio quality.
Yes! Blip AI supports custom voice commands that you can configure in the settings. You can create shortcuts for frequently used phrases, punctuation, and formatting commands.
Yes, Blip AI supports multiple languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and many more. You can switch languages in the settings.
Yes, on Pro. Blip AI supports both cloud and on-device models. Blip Cloud (the default) needs an internet connection; with Pro you can download an on-device Whisper model (Base, Small, Medium or Large Turbo) from the Models page. On-device models transcribe and clean up your text entirely on your computer, so dictation works offline and your audio never leaves your device.
Privacy & Security
Absolutely. Your privacy is our top priority. All audio data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We do not store your transcriptions or voice data after processing. Your data is never used for training or shared with third parties.
Not today. Blip AI isn't HIPAA compliant and doesn't sign business associate agreements (BAAs), so check with your compliance team before dictating patient information. What does hold: your dictation history stays on your device, not on Blip's servers, and Pro adds on-device models that transcribe without an internet connection.
You choose. With Blip Cloud (the default), your audio is sent over an encrypted connection to secure cloud servers, and no voice recordings are permanently stored. With an on-device model (included with Pro), everything is processed locally on your computer and your audio never leaves your device.
Troubleshooting
First, check that your microphone is properly connected and selected in Blip AI settings. Also verify that macOS/Windows has granted microphone permissions to Blip AI in System Preferences/Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Try adjusting your microphone input level and speaking closer to the mic.
Blip shows this whenever it can't check your sign-in with our servers, so it doesn't always mean something is wrong with your account. Antivirus, a firewall or a VPN that blocks Blip can cause it. Add Blip AI to your antivirus's safe list (or pause it for a few minutes), turn off any VPN, and sign in again. Step-by-step guide for Windows: /articles/windows-troubleshooting.
Make sure you have granted Accessibility permissions to Blip AI in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility (macOS) or similar settings on Windows. Without these permissions, Blip AI cannot insert text into other applications.
Speak clearly and at a moderate pace, use a good quality microphone, minimize background noise, and ensure you have a stable internet connection. You can also train Blip AI to recognize industry-specific terminology in the settings.
Yes! Blip AI works great with headphones, AirPods, and other Bluetooth headsets. Just make sure the correct input device is selected in Blip AI settings.
Comparison
Unlike Dragon (discontinued for Mac in 2018), Blip AI is actively developed with modern AI technology, offers a cleaner interface, works on modern macOS versions, and has a free plan (2,000 words a month). Check our detailed comparison at /comparison/dragon-alternative.
Blip AI offers significantly better accuracy using advanced AI models, works in more applications reliably, provides custom commands, supports longer dictation sessions, and includes features like auto-punctuation and formatting that aren't available in the built-in Mac dictation.
Two differences stand out (as of October 2026). Blip AI runs on Linux as well as Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, while Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice have no Linux app. And both are cloud-only, while Blip Pro adds on-device models that work offline. Prices and free allowances differ too; see /comparison/wispr-flow-alternative and /comparison/aqua-voice-alternative for numbers checked on each vendor's site.
