What Blip AI does on Linux
Hold Ctrl + Super, speak, let go
Polished text appears wherever your cursor is: browsers, Slack, editors, terminals. The hotkey is configurable.
Cleans up as it types
Filler words go, punctuation is added, and "Tuesday, no, Wednesday" comes out as "Wednesday".
Works in your terminal
Blip sends the terminal’s own paste shortcut, so dictation works in Konsole, Kitty and Alacritty.
Action Mode
Start with "Hey Blip" and describe the reply you want. Blip drafts it instead of typing your words back.
Your words, your style
Add names and jargon to the custom dictionary, save voice shortcuts, and pick a writing style per kind of app.
Cloud or on-device
Blip Cloud is the default, so a laptop without a GPU gets full accuracy. Download a Whisper model to dictate offline.
Install in two minutes
On X11, make the AppImage executable and run it. On Wayland, follow these four steps first.
These steps are only needed on Wayland. On X11 sessions Blip works out of the box — you can skip this setup.
Install the required tools
$sudo apt update$sudo apt install wtype wl-clipboard ydotool
Join the input group for true push-to-talk + ydotool
$sudo groupadd -f input # most desktops already have it; -f is a no-op if so$sudo usermod -aG input $USER
Then fully log out and log back in (or reboot) — the group change does not apply to your current session. Verify after logging back in:
$groups | grep input
Start the ydotool daemon as a user service so it runs on login
$systemctl --user enable --now ydotool
Confirm it's active (run inside your graphical session):
$systemctl --user status ydotool
If ydotoold can't open /dev/uinput, you haven't completed step 2's log-out/log-in yet. On wlroots compositors (Hyprland, Sway) wtype works without ydotool, so this step is only required on GNOME / KWin.
Add ~/.local/bin to your PATH and run Blip
$echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc # or ~/.zshrc
Then make the AppImage executable and launch it:
$# at the location$chmod +x Blip-AI-0.5.8.AppImage$./Blip-AI-0.5.8.AppImage
If you move the AppImage to a different location, re-run step 4 so it points to its new path.

FAQ
- Does Blip AI work on Wayland?
- Yes. Blip AI runs on Wayland and X11. On X11 it works out of the box; on Wayland there is a two-minute setup (wtype, wl-clipboard, ydotool and the input group) so it can type into other windows.
- Which Linux distributions does Blip AI support?
- Blip AI ships an x86_64 AppImage for Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora and Arch. It works on GNOME, KDE and wlroots compositors such as Hyprland and Sway.
