Set up Blip AI on Windows
Install Blip AI on Windows 10 or 11, get past the SmartScreen warning, allow the microphone, and dictate by holding Ctrl + Win.
Updated
What you need: a 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
1. Download and install
- Go to the download page and click Download for Windows. You'll get a file named like
Blip-AI-Setup-0.5.8.exe. - Double-click the file in your Downloads folder.
2. Get past the "Windows protected your PC" screen
The first time you open the installer, Windows shows a blue screen that says Windows protected your PC and lists the publisher as Unknown publisher. That's expected: Blip AI is new, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen doesn't recognize it yet, and we're completing Microsoft's publisher certification.
- Click More info.
- Check that the app name is the Blip AI installer you just downloaded.
- Click Run anyway. The installer opens.
- Follow the installer to the end, then open Blip AI.
3. Allow the microphone
If Windows asks whether Blip AI can use the microphone, click Yes. If dictation doesn't pick up your voice, check the privacy settings.
Your version of Windows
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security.
- Under App permissions, click Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy.
- Under App permissions, click Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access for this device and Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Scroll down and turn on Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.
These steps follow Microsoft's guide to microphone permissions in Windows.
4. Sign in
Sign in with your Blip account, or create one. The free plan includes 2,000 words a month, and you don't need a card.
5. Dictate for the first time
- Click into any text box, such as a chat message, an email or a document.
- Hold Ctrl + Win and say a sentence.
- Let go. The cleaned-up text appears where your cursor is.
- Hands-free: add Space (hold Ctrl + Win + Space) to keep dictating without holding the keys.
- Action Mode: start with "Hey Blip" and describe what you want, such as "Hey Blip, reply that I'll send the file tonight." Blip drafts the message instead of typing your words back.
- Hotkeys are configurable in Blip's settings.
FAQ
Is it safe to click "Run anyway" for Blip AI? The warning appears because SmartScreen doesn't recognize new apps yet, not because anything was found in the file. Check that the file is the Blip AI installer you downloaded from blipai.app before clicking Run anyway.
Why does Windows say "Unknown publisher" for Blip AI? Blip AI is completing Microsoft's publisher certification. Until that's done, SmartScreen shows the installer as coming from an unknown publisher.
Blip doesn't hear my voice on Windows. What should I check? Make sure microphone access is on and that desktop apps are allowed to use the microphone, under Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone on Windows 11, or Settings → Privacy → Microphone on Windows 10.
What's the Blip AI hotkey on Windows? Hold Ctrl + Win to dictate, and add Space for hands-free mode. You can change the hotkey in Blip's settings.
Which Windows versions does Blip AI support? Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit.
